Lunar New Year Celebrations Gain Popularity in Las Vegas
The Big Game and Valentine's Day aren't the only events going on in Las Vegas in February. Lunar New Year is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. For a city that enjoys celebrating cultural diversity, Lunar New Year in Las Vegas is a sight to see with festivities planned both on and off the Strip.
Guests are treated to parade-like lion dances winding through properties along with beautiful, traditional displays of elaborate flowers and décor that symbolize good luck. Restaurants offer special celebratory meals filled with traditional Asian delicacies. Each year is a new celebration, and 2019 is the Year of the Pig.
Check out these notable attractions around town to celebrate Lunar New Year – Las Vegas style.
On Tuesday, February 5, Downtown Summerlin® celebrates Lunar New Year with a festive parade at 6 p.m. on Park Centre Drive. Guests will be entertained with an oversized Chinese dragon, characters dressed as lions with percussionists and glorious fan dancers. Red envelopes filled with chocolate gold coins and surprise gift cards will be distributed randomly to patrons and children in attendance, while supplies last. The event is free and open to the public. Visit www.downtownsummerlin.com for details.
According to Halee Harczynski, marketing director, Downtown Summerlin, “Lunar New Year is a significant cultural event. Last year, the parade was a big success, and we expect nothing different this year. We look forward to building on the parade this year and paying homage to the Asian culture during this celebratory time.”
The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens features a display that includes a representation of the grounds at the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees. The main feature of the temple grounds is the flower pagoda, closely guarded by two Chinese Fu Dogs. The West Garden features eight piglets surrounding a mother and father pig. Eight is a lucky number for this year. Flanking the garden are two majestic cherry blossom trees. The complimentary exhibit is open daily January 12 – March 2.
The Venetian and The Palazzo
Throughout The Venetian and The Palazzo, guests will find symbols that celebrate the Year of the Pig. The main display at the waterfall atrium features a colossal sculpture. The 3,000-pound golden pig stands 16 feet tall and is surrounded by tangerine trees, chrysanthemums, orchids, succulents and bromeliads. There are also nine smaller pigs positioned throughout the resorts.
Many other properties including Wynn and Encore Las Vegas, ARIA and MGM Grand provide a breathtaking showcase of festive decorations, traditional cuisine and activities to commemorate the Year of the Pig as we usher in the Lunar New Year and wish wealth, good health and fortune to all.
